STEELCON BUILDS ITS FIRST CHIMNEY IN SHANGHAI

Steelcon developed and managed the chimney work for BAYER AG who required a 50 m tall steel chimney with a structural shell of 2300 mm and two steel inner liner with diameters of 1100 mm and 800 mm respectively.
The steel chimney was delivered to and erected by Suzhou Rainbow in March of 2010, one of the largest standard steel chimney companies in China, with nearly 20 years of experience. All the work was completed under the supervision and management of Steelcon.

Steelcon received this order in September of 2009. Steelcon was in charge of the design, engineering and delivery of its patented vibration damper and the supervision of the production and erection. The production was carried out by Suzhou Rainbow Huading in China.

Bayer AG entrusted Steelcon to ensure that they were supplied with a quality product by having Steelcon supervise the production. Steelcon’s top priority has been to follow the quality of the erection work very carefully.

Peter Rasmussen, the project manager, as well as Steelcon sales manager Laurs Pedersen, went to China for the start-up meeting. When Steelcon finished the engineering and construction specifications, a subsequent meeting took place with Suzhou Rainbow Huading to finalize details.

It was a challenging job with no difficulties!

According to the company, “China is a challenging country to work and carry out projects due to differences in culture and business mentality”. In spite of these differences, the project went smoothly for Steelcon who is familiar with working in different parts of the world. An example of this is the current project being developed in Kazakhstan with two 100 m steel chimneys ....

BEROA’S GROWTH IN THE US MARKET

One year ago Beroa integrated the US company, Beroa Ramco, Inc. formerly Ramco Solutions, Inc into the group, an important step for the Group in the US market. This transaction contributed to complete Beroa’s strategy of being present in both capital projects and maintenance works in refractory installation and chimney construction in the US, where the company owns 90% of Karrena International and 35% of International Chimney Corporation.

During the last year Beroa has delivered several projects of installation of refractory material in the US through Karrena’s activity. The majority of these works involved international collaboration with other companies of the Group, taking advantages of the synergy generated by the different businesses.

The projects include the design and construction of a reinforced concrete chimney (600’ in height) with two fiberglass reinforced plastic liners for Basin Electric Power Cooperative at the Leland Olds Power plant, in Stanton North Dakota. Sargent & Lundy selected Karrena for the job.

The Leland Olds Plant was delivered last July with the collaboration of Bierrum on the engineering, CRI (Chimneys and Refractories International) on the supervision and ICC (International Chimney Corporation) on the workforce.
In March, Karrena International developed its second project for RRI Energy (formerly Reliant Energy): the design and construction of a chimney of 552’-6’’ in height for its Cheswick Power Plant, in Springdale, Pennsylvania.

Karrena was responsible for the design of the reinforced concrete column, the brick liner, pressurized system, as well as the layout of components including interior ladder, platforms, liner supports and specialty equipment. ICC collaborated on the engineering, supervision and with the workforce.

The satisfaction of our clients is our ultimate goal

RRI Energy is an excellent representation. Two years ago, Karrena Int. developed a reinforced concrete chimney of 562-62’’ in height with two brick liners and pressurized system for its Keystone Power Station, in Shelocta, Pennsylvania.

Another important project worth mentioning is the design and construction of a reinforced concrete chimney of 500’ with two carbon steel liners for Dominion Virginia Power at Virginia City Hybrid Energy Centre.

Karrena International was responsible for the complete structural design of the chimney and the supply of special construction equipment as well as for the shell erection by their supervisors and their chimney personnel.

Furthermore, all chimney components such as the shell, layout of the liner and the interior fittings were designed by Karrena. This was the second project delivered to Dominion Virginia Power. In 2007 a reinforced concrete chimney of 391’ height with a single fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) liner was designed and constructed for its Chesterfield Power Station at Chester (Virginia).

International Chimney Corporation (ICC), recently finished the design and construction of a reinforced concrete chimney (316’ in height) with two fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) liners for Formosa Plastics Corporation, CFB Plant in Point Comfort, Texas. ICC was responsible for the structural design of the reinforced concrete column, the FRP liners as well as the layout of components including interior ladder, platforms, liners supports and specialty equipment.

All these projects and the satisfaction shown by the customers, as the majority of them have contracted for more than one contract, are the best reference and show the growth of the Beroa Group in the US market.

BE READY FOR THE RECOVERY!

Jorge Álvarez
Chief Executive Officer

This crisis will pass, and each of us must be ready for the moment. The effects of the present turmoil have had a serious impact in the economy, in our own companies, our current clients and all our business partners. We all have suffered reductions in orders, revenues and profits. These are also tough times for banks. Because banks are reducing their exposure to risks, it has become increasingly more difficult to negotiate rates and credit limits with them. But this economic crisis, like all others before it, will pass. Growth will return, although not in the same way or in the same places as before. The developing countries, especially China, India and Brazil will be a new source of projects for all our industry. The result will be a different world to the one we knew, some countries and regions will have it difficult to sustain the living standards they were enjoying, other regions are already out of the crisis in what refers to investments and growth. We have to be ready to take our share. It is important to be ready for the moment when the recovery comes. The companies that will benefit the most from this moment are those companies that:

- Have reduced operating costs and increased productivity.

- Have been able to preserve a workload through the crisis, being able to retain key staff - Are bold enough to confront the new scenario, placing the know how in the markets that are to lead in this economic recovery.

- Have maintained a professional approach to clients, defending their own position but trying to help customers and other industrial partners during the downturn.

We at Beroa have been very active in the last months making sure that our group is ready for the recovery. We are working closely with our customers to help them be the winners and leaders in that recovery.
